In 1997, Sean McKeever self-published his very first work, The Waiting Place, a story about the ennui that comes with being a young adult trapped in a town that doesn't seem to be going anywhere. It was soon picked up by Slave Labor Graphics and McKeever along with Brendon and Brian Fraim and then Mike Norton finished the entire saga of the town of Northern Plains and its denizens in three volumes plus an epilogue.

I spend this episode taking a complete look at The Waiting Place, which has been one of my favorite comics coming-of-age stories since I bought the volume one trade in 2001. This includes a full synopsis as well as a review.

Show notes and pictures are available at Pop Culture Affidavit, which is also where you can see regular weekly blog entries about the randomness that is pop culture.

In this week's ball-slapping episode, Magnus continues enjoying what little remains of the downtime before the 100th episode and the onslaught of megaseries that 2015 and 2016 portend.

This week's comics focus on Batman #467-#469, a three part story entitled Shadowbox, wherein Chuck Dixon and Tom Lyle pretty much nail down what will be the status quo between Bruce Wayne and Tim Drake for the first several years of their partnership.

Batman & Robin begin, one might say.

Also relevant to that is The General from Detective Comics #654-#656. Tim Drake is noticeably absent from that story, which says much about the status quo that Dixon was laboring to create.

Plus, how can you not love the art by Tom Lyle and Michael Netzer, right? Right? Am I right?

So all around this is some amazingly awesome Batman goodness which, strangely enough, nobody ever recognizes as being as formative to this era of Batman and Robin as they are. So luckily Magnus is here to kick some awesome science on all your lame selves.

Unfortunately, this much Awesome comes at the expense of listener feedback this week.

Even so, you miserable beggars shouldn't feel left out. Commoners and simpletons such as you are always welcome to pay your pathetic attempt at tribute to Magnus. DiManzocorp interns are ready, willing, able and eager to accept bribes to present your meager missives to your wise leader. The email address to use is excellency@trentusmagnus.com, whereupon your leader might consider thinking about the possibility of potentially discussing whatever you have in mind some day. And that's a promise!

In an act of absolutely unprecedented charity, your leader permits the lowly rabble such as you to kiss his ring regarding this or any other episode. Thus, notes of homage may be sent to excellency@trentusmagnus.com for DiManzocorp interns to review.

ACBC CON COVERAGE CONTINUES!Before Gene Hendricks, Chris Tyler, Scott McGregor and Chris Honeywell even SET FOOT in ACBC Con, they sat down to a screening of MAD MAX in anticipation of seeing Fury Road the next day! Join them in their SWANKY-ASS hotel room as they comment on the action onscreen! Many Mad Max tideas are bandied about - Honeywell has a FEVER DREAM theory and Gene makes the LETHAL WEAPON connection! Everyone was revved up and over-tired, so there is some swearin' and tangents - so be warned. It might be quicker if you just sawed through your foot!

Everything has changed again...except that it really hasn't...all that much.

Yes, I know that is a trite cliché, and I'm sorry I have to use it again, but things keep changing in the Green Lantern books, and so it also must on JUST ONE OF THE GUYS. This time out, in Green Lantern #165, the change is a new creative team in writer Ben Raab and artist Rick Burchett and a new story with Kyle attempting to recruit a new Green Lantern Corps in order to hunt down Amon Sur and the Black Circle. There's an introduction of a character that'll make his way into the current run of Green Lantern seeded in the book...and there's also some truly punny tales in there as well. Is the Ben Raab run going to lead to the downfall of the series like so many have told me? We'll just have to find out together. So unless you want Agraria-7...a farm planet (SIGH!!!)...to be invaded by giant space bugs, I suggest you grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and start to listening.

Scott goes rogue from Dr. Bill to record this episode live at the Atlantic City Boardwalk Convention that he and several freaks attended May 14th-17th. They are joined by a cast of thousands (of cosplayers) and also some "normal" humans like Best Selling Author Brenda Cothern, Artist (Best selling to our table) Drew Blank and Stan the Man Lee's video game that I recorded myself playing. Also, a special appearance by the bane of parents everywhere, the one and only, world famous: Pikachu the Pokemon. Not recorded live are the hazards involved in staying an extra day in Atlantic City and finding yourself in Ballys at the roulette table at 3 in the morning.

In the 2nd part of their look at comics characters about to become TV stars, Mike and Andrew take a look back at the Linda Danvers era of SUPERGIRL. Peter David writes a mean quip and Ed Benes draws short skirts in MANY HAPPY RETURNS, a 6 issue arc from SUPERGIRL 75-80. What happens when super cynical, post millenial Supergirl meets sweet, naive 1950's Supergirl? Listen in and find out!

My look at non-superhero comics throughout DC's 80-year history continues with the crime-drama genre and to represent that, I've chosen the 1988 miniseries Cinder and Ashe, which was written by Gerry Conway and drawn by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez (praise be his name). It's a story about two private investigators looking for a missing girl and getting drawn into a political conspiracy that involves a man from their past they both thought dead.

This episode is part of the #ConwayXover, a crossover among several podcasts that will be celebrating the work of Gerry Conway as well as putting a spotlight on issues concerning creator equity in comics. Special thanks to Michael Bradley for inviting me on board!
